In 2022, a wild case occurred in Washington state - a man beat and cut his wife, and then, alive and begging for mercy, he tied him up with tape, took him into the forest and buried him. The woman lay in the grave for 12 hours. Fortunately, it was shallow and the victim managed to get out.

Chae Kyung Ahn, 54, claims he was under the influence of a large dose of a drug prescribed to him to treat post-traumatic stress disorder. He states that everything is to blame for his mental illness and the fact that doctors treated him incorrectly - “they treated him and at the same time undertreated him.”

Chae Kyung An, 54, brutally beat, stabbed and then bound his wife Young An with tape - despite her pleas for mercy. Young Ahn managed to call 911 on her Apple Watch before he took her into the woods, placed her in a shallow grave and covered her with dirt.

Young An said she begged Chae to stop and think about their children. According to her, she lay in the hole for 12 hours before she was able to gather the strength to dig herself out. "I do not need anything. Today I will kill you,” she recalls him saying.

The woman says she and her children still live in fear.

“From that moment on, my life and the lives of my children were shattered,” she said. “I will have to live with the emotional trauma and health problems for the rest of my life.”

The prosecution asked the judge to give Chae Kyung Ahn a higher sentence, which the defense agreed to after reaching a plea bargain. In early March, he pleaded guilty to attempted second-degree murder.

Chae's lawyer also spoke in the courtroom during the hearing, detailing his client's history of mental illness and post-traumatic stress disorder, which he said contributed to his client's actions on the day of the attack.

At the time of the attack, Chae was homeless, isolated from friends and family, “overmedicated and undertreated” for post-traumatic stress disorder, and now lives every day with “regret and remorse,” the lawyer said.

Speaking in the courtroom, Chae said: “I wish I could go back and never go into the house that day and just leave.”

A Thurston County judge gave Chae Kyung Ahn nearly the maximum sentence and ordered him to have no contact with Yong Ahn. The sentence for this crime is 13 years in prison.

“The crime to which you pleaded guilty was heinous,” the judge said. “You didn’t let him call for help, you attacked a man, held him and buried him alive.” By admitting your guilt, you have admitted your responsibility for this.”

The judge told the victim he hoped the sentence would allow her to move on.

“I am sure there are no words to describe the physical suffering, fear and anguish you felt for twelve hours, thinking you might lose your life and never see your children again,” the judge said. -You are strong and brave. I hope today's hearing brings closure to this chapter and allows you to focus on your emotional and mental healing."
