A real tragedy occurred in the Indian village of Vadki (Maharashtra state). Six men, all close relatives, went down the well in an attempt to save a cat that had fallen there. Only one survived, and only by a miracle. The abandoned well was used as a pit for animal waste.
According to local media, the cat fell into a large well around 5 pm and the men of the Kale family attempted a rescue. One by one they descended into the poisonous pit, but were unable to get out.
The victims were identified as Manik Kale (65), his son Sandeep (36), Anil Kale (53), his son Bablu (28) and Babasaheb Gaikwad (36).
“Rescuers found the bodies of five of the six people who, one by one, jumped into an abandoned well containing animal waste in an attempt to save the cat,” police said. “After this, the sixth man, who was also trying to save the others, entered the well with a rope tied around his waist and survived. He was injured, but he was pulled out and sent to the hospital for treatment.”
The only survivor is 35-year-old Vijay Manik Kale, also a member of the family who died in the tragic incident. He is reported to be in stable condition after being treated at a government hospital.
Apparently, the culprit is poisonous gases emanating from animal waste that filled the well. According to the Times of India, one body was recovered from the toxic sludge around 11 pm on Tuesday, while the remaining four bodies were recovered within the next hour and a half.
Senior officials said two large pumps from the Ahmednagar Municipal Corporation were used to remove the sludge and five ambulances were kept on standby at the spot.
Police said the matter is currently under investigation.
