There were victims among the security forces, but the criminals managed to escape. 
A daring attack on police officers in the style of the Wild West (or, given the realities, rather, the East) took place in the north of France in the Normandy department of Eyre. Four men armed with automatic rifles (the media say they were AK-47s) ambushed the toll road barrier and attacked the prison convoy when it stopped. They took the French prison system by surprise. Two law enforcement officers were killed and three more were seriously injured.
Footage captured by a bus passenger shows one of the attackers and a prison van blocked by a burning vehicle.
It is noted that the police were transporting 30-year-old Mohammed A., nicknamed La Mouche (The Fly), who is serving a sentence for burglary, to another prison. However, he is known to police primarily as the head of a drug gang.
French media write that the police managed to wound one of the attackers, but the prisoner was still able to escape with his gang. They left the crime scene in two cars, one of which was later found burned. The French Ministry of Internal Affairs mobilized several hundred police officers and gendarmes to search for the criminals.
