With these payments, he also purchased video games, musical instruments and paid off debts.

An army veteran who killed his wife was sentenced to prison in the United States. The man received insurance payments for her death, which he decided to spend in a rather unconventional way.

The tragedy in question occurred in 2019 in Hays, Kansas. US Army Reserve Officer Colby Trickle called 911 and said his 26-year-old wife, Kristen, had committed suicide. When examining the body, the pathologist confirmed Trickle's words. However, the police did not close the case and continued the investigation.

Soon, law enforcement officers had questions about some of the circumstances of the incident. So, they noticed that Kristen was wearing only underwear at the time of death; they were not convinced by the alleged method of suicide. Detectives also found out that the girl had an alarm on her phone, which went off the morning after her death.

“She set the alarm to get ready for work, she had plans for that day. People who decide to commit suicide most often do not have any plans. They don’t set alarm clocks, it doesn’t matter to them when they get up,” said one of the participants in the investigation.

Colby, meanwhile, received payments from his wife's insurance. In total they amounted to 120 thousand dollars. Over the next eight months, he completely spent the money - most of it went towards paying off his personal debts, video games and musical instruments, as the young man dreamed of becoming a performer. In addition, Trickle purchased a life-size sex doll, which cost him $2,000.

Investigator Joshua Burkholder said that this fact also aroused suspicion among law enforcement officers. “I think everyone goes through a period of mourning when a loved one dies. The fact that he ordered such a doll just a few months after the tragedy seems strange,” he explained.

The purchase also caused bewilderment among Kristen's relatives. “I was absolutely shocked that he would use the insurance money in this way. It's like he bought Kristen a replacement with her money,” said her aunt, Dellin Rice.

The investigation into the death of Kristen Trickle lasted two years. All this time, Colby remained free. However, in the end, the body of evidence led investigators to him. The man appeared in court, which found him guilty of first-degree murder. The doll incident was also mentioned during the proceedings. The man's mother, who testified as a defense witness, told jurors her son made the purchase to help him sleep better at night because he had been having nightmares since his wife's death. The woman stated that she did not know about the real purpose of the doll.

In November 2023, Colby Kirkle was sentenced to life in prison. The story was also the subject of the documentary Kristen Trickle: An Autopsy of a Mind.
