Failed penis injections: how a 70-year-old man won the largest medical compensation (2 photos)
A New Mexico man has received what is believed to be the largest medical malpractice settlement in history after doctors gave him a series of injections into his penis.
An unnamed patient has been awarded more than $412 million by NuMale Medical Center after a series of "invasive erectile dysfunction shots" left him permanently damaged.
A New Mexico jury has awarded him a record-breaking settlement after deciding the 70-year-old plaintiff was the victim of fraud.
In 2017, the then 66-year-old man went to a Wyoming clinic seeking help with fatigue and weight loss.
The clinic, which claimed to provide "compassionate care with cutting-edge treatments for erectile dysfunction, testosterone replacement therapy, premature ejaculation, and hair restoration," was accused of misdiagnosing him and giving him "invasive erectile dysfunction shots" unnecessarily.
The lawyers alleged that the client underwent numerous medications and procedures before being operated on by an unqualified physician assistant.
In their statement, the lawyers said the unprecedented verdict sends a powerful message that "healthcare professionals cannot prioritize profits over the well-being of patients without being held accountable."
Laurie Benko, one of the man's attorneys, added: "This is a national record, and rightfully so, because I don't think licensed professionals can cheat patients for money. This is a blatant breach of their fiduciary duty. It's a breach of trust, and any time someone puts on a white coat, they shouldn't be able to do that."
In a statement, NuMale Medical said its priority is helping patients, adding: "While we respect the legal process, due to the ongoing litigation, we are unable to comment on the specific details of the case at this time."
