Canadian Mistakenly Amputates Healthy Leg (3 photos)
Jason Kennedy was admitted to Grace Hospital in Manitoba, Canada, with a severe bone infection in his right leg. The 48-year-old woke up after surgery to find his healthy limb missing.
In October, Kennedy first went to the hospital with pain and bleeding in his right leg.
The decision to amputate his right leg was made a few days later, and the surgery was scheduled for October 31.
A Winnipeg man said: "After the surgery, I thought I was having a nightmare. I felt pain in my right leg. I knew right away that I had no left leg, but I couldn't believe it."
"I was asking myself, why did this happen to me? And the first thing I thought of was forgiveness. I can forgive people easily because that's what my family taught me: my mom, dad, and grandma. They showed me how important it is to be able to forgive."
Kennedy's mother, Yvonne, recalls: "My son said, 'Mom, I have something to tell you. They cut off the wrong leg.' Jason should be compensated for what happened to him."
A Winnipeg Regional Health Authority spokesperson said that due to patient confidentiality, they can only provide limited information "in this complex clinical situation."
He added: "Health care workers have met with the patient and sincerely apologized and discussed next steps."
