Genetic lottery: man born with four fingers on each hand (2 photos)
At the age of one, the boy underwent surgery to remove the bones of the middle finger on his left hand, as they were underdeveloped. On his right hand, the middle and ring fingers fused into one.
A man who was born with four fingers on each hand has shared his life story. A user with the nickname kuparata shared a photo of his hands on the popular Reddit forum.
Many people were surprised by this difference in the man. Some of them wanted to know how it happened that the man only has eight fingers.
"Hi everyone, as you can see from the photo, I am missing a middle finger on both hands. This condition is called oligodactyly," wrote a user with the nickname kuparata.
According to the man, when he was one year old, he had surgery to remove the bones of the middle finger on his left hand, as they were underdeveloped and "stuck" on the back of his hand (just under where the middle finger should start). On his right hand, the middle and ring fingers were fused into one.
After he told his story, many people had questions, as they had never seen anything like this before. Most of them concerned the obscene gesture that is shown with the middle finger. The man responded by saying that he simply had to "honk and scream" when he was seriously unhappy with something like driving.
Some people had heard of the condition and shared their own stories.
"My cousin has the exact same condition and had surgery as a child to help with her hand dexterity. She otherwise leads a pretty calm life and I'm proud of her. When I was younger, I used to notice her hands, but now when I'm around her, I don't even notice or care. I wish you all the best," one girl wrote.
Other forum users noted that they had never seen anything like it before.
"What kind of fingers are there that people are born without?", "You must be very polite", "This may be the coolest photo I've seen in a long time. These hands look absolutely masterpieces", "I especially like how you can see that the fingers on the right hand never fully spread out, and the left is a work of art. Genetic lottery. Beautiful," they wrote.
