Woman Dies After Buttock Lift in Turkey (4 photos)
Hayley Dowell, 38, from the UK, travelled to Turkey to have liposuction, a tummy tuck and a buttock lift. The operation took place at the BHT clinic in Istanbul. Without finishing the job, the surgeon left the patient with the anaesthetist and hurried out of the operating room.
Hayley paid over £7,000 for the procedures.
During the operation, the patient suffered an embolism - a blockage of a blood vessel - and died around midnight on October 3 last year.
Disturbing details of the operation were recently revealed at a preliminary hearing at Winchester Coroner's Court.
According to Neil Dowell's evidence, his wife only consented to two of the three plastic surgeries.
"We found a surgeon who had a clinic named after him," the widower said. "He is one of the top five surgeons in Turkey."
The man also claimed that the clinic failed to inform his wife of the risks.
"The operation was supposed to last six hours but it only took one hour and forty-five minutes. The surgeon left halfway through the procedure and left the anaesthetist to do the whole job alone. You can't do both at the same time. They asked me to sign the consent form after she had already passed away," Neil added.
In 2023 alone, six Britons, including Hayley, have died after botched operations in Turkey. The UK Ministry of Health has warned citizens not to look abroad for cheap medical services.
"Our mission is to become a global brand in healthcare, ensuring the safety of patients and staff in accordance with international quality standards," the BHT clinic website says. It also mentions the latest equipment, which is only available in Turkey and only in a few institutions around the world.
