In China, a woman died after six plastic surgeries in 24 hours (3 photos)
Her family sued the clinic for $168,000, but was awarded half that amount.
A woman surnamed Liu from Guangxi Province entered the clinic in Nanning after taking out a loan of more than 40,000 yuan ($5,600) to pay for six cosmetic procedures.
She underwent double eyelid and nose jobs that same day, a five-hour operation. She then had liposuction on her thighs, and the next morning, fat from her thighs was injected into her face and chest, another five-hour operation.
On December 11, Liu was discharged from the hospital. She walked to the elevator and lost consciousness. The hospital was unable to help her and transferred her to another hospital, where she was later pronounced dead.
The autopsy report stated that she died of acute respiratory failure caused by complications from liposuction.
Liu is survived by an 8-year-old daughter and a 4-year-old son.
Liu's family sues hospital for 1.18 million yuan ($168,000) in compensation
"The hospital offered me 200,000 yuan in compensation. I said that for a person to die, at least a million yuan should be paid," her husband said. "I refused their offer and said we would just go to court."
In May 2021, the court initially ruled that the hospital was fully responsible for Liu's death and ordered compensation of more than 1 million yuan ($140,000).
However, the clinic appealed, and in August last year, the court revised the compensation amount to 590 thousand yuan, recognizing only partial liability of the clinic.
The investigation showed that Liu's own physical condition could also have caused her death, and she was aware of the risks. It is noted that the clinic had the necessary documents to carry out the procedure, and the amount of fat removed met medical standards.
