More than 500 pilgrims died during the Hajj to Saudi Arabia (4 photos + 1 video)

The main cause of death is extreme heat. And the crush.

Every year, thousands of Muslim pilgrims flock to Mecca to perform the Hajj. Not everyone returns home. Hundreds of people die each year from the heat, fatal injuries sustained in crushes and the inability to access water and recreation along the route.

This year is no exception. The total number of pilgrims killed during the Hajj to Saudi Arabia has already reached 577, AFP reports, citing sources. Most of them are Egyptians.

Among the dead, 322 people died from the heat (currently the temperature in Mecca exceeds 51 degrees), and one was crushed in a stampede. At least 60 more dead were Jordanians.

Such a large number of deaths is due to the fact that most of them are illegal pilgrims. They cannot afford to pay for an expensive visa for the Hajj and travel on their own. They arrive at the camp to help believers without prior notice, thereby causing chaos in the stable operation of services. It is simply impossible to accommodate an endless stream of people and provide them with what they need right away, so many are left without water, without access to air-conditioned premises and medical care. Naturally, such conditions turn out to be unbearable for some pilgrims, especially considering that the hajj is mainly performed by elderly people.

Also, a certain percentage die every year in the stampede at the Grand Mosque. where it is always crowded. The temperature in the area where the rituals are held is unbearable - on June 17, in the Great Mosque in Mecca, the air warmed up to +51.4 degrees. The combination of these factors makes the stay of Hajj pilgrims extremely risky.

However, the Muslim pilgrimage to Mecca is one of the five pillars of Islam, along with shahada (the formula of Monotheism and recognition of the prophetic mission of Muhammad), prayer, fasting during the month of Ramadan and zakat (an annual tax in Islamic law paid on various types of income and property ). All Muslims who can do this must perform Hajj at least once in their lives. If a person had the opportunity to make a pilgrimage, but he did not, then after his death he will appear before Allah as a disobedient person, since he did not fulfill his duty. The Hajj is performed from the beginning of the 12th month of the lunar Muslim calendar. Every year, the Hajj is held for five days, starting from the 8th and ending with the 12th day of the month of Dhul-Hijjah, in 2024 - from June 14 to 19.
