In Brazil, a circus performer was taken to intensive care after a botched performance. Aliane Dias fell approximately 20 seconds after floating above the stage with a wire attached to her hair.
The incident occurred on Saturday, September 13, in Miracem, northeast of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. She received first aid on stage.
The next day, Circo Robatiny issued a statement: "The audience was shocked, but Aliana was quickly given first aid and taken to the hospital. She is recovering."
Aerial hair acrobatics is a true art form, in which performers hang from their own hair and perform acrobatic feats.
Preparing for the performance not only requires tremendous physical fitness but also involves a complex braiding process – a metal or wooden ring with a carabiner is attached to the hair.
Circus representatives stated that the fall was the artist's fault, not due to equipment failure: "In this act, the gymnast's hair is attached to a steel cable. She is responsible for ensuring that the braiding is performed correctly in accordance with protocol. Aliane admitted that she performed the braiding incorrectly, which led to the accident. We await her recovery and return to learn more."
Despite the incident, the troupe performed the show the following evening.
