Bags of paws: the bizarre way the Chinese transport dogs and cats (5 photos + 1 video)
A very strange type of crime has appeared on China's highways in recent months: bags and packages containing dead dogs have been found on the roads. No detectives were needed; photos from eyewitnesses and speed cameras soon revealed the origin of this "bag plague."
It's just a plastic bag....
The "hanging" trend
With the arrival of the Year of the Dragon, millions of Chinese traveled to celebrate the holiday with their families. Many brought their pets with them, as they would be away from home for more than a week. But buying a carrier and taking it into the car? That's too much. They simply put the dog in a bag and hung it outside the car. Witnesses have already published dozens of photos of dogs stuffed into plastic or woven bags and tied to the outside of the trunk.
What did they expect, simply clamping the bag under the trunk?
Other "lucky" animals are secured to the roof of the car. Some animals apparently travel in the car without any protection and, frightened, jump out the window right onto the busy highway. Social media users went to check this story for themselves and were horrified. On February 25th, blogger Wu Jiayu drove along a 300-kilometer stretch of highway from Leshan, Sichuan Province, and found 62 animal carcasses. About eight of them were dogs, the rest were cats. The condition of the bodies left no doubt: all had died en route.
A head next to the exhaust pipe?
How did they come up with this!?
Of course, veterinarians one after another say such a journey is terribly stressful for an animal. Even if a dog doesn't fall out of its carrier, it can become seriously ill from fear and stress right there. Moreover, the noise of overtaking cars has caused dogs to try to escape from their carriers and fall right under the wheels of other cars. They also experience fecal or urinary incontinence.
Some dogs fell out and survived, or got lost and became homeless.
This was the reason for "evicting" dogs – out of fear of the long journey, dogs began urinating for the first time in their lives, ruining the upholstery, and developing a foul odor. Unwilling to tolerate this on a long journey, dogs were "evicted." It's unclear who first recommended this method as effective. I've never seen anything like this with cars. But they might put a dog in a backpack when riding a bike or moped, that's the most they can do.
Someone lost an expensive dog.
Why do you think everyone in China has decided to transport their beloved pets like this?
