A man in China suffered burns over 90% of his body after an electric bike battery exploded. The incident occurred while the device was charging.
A student at Wuhan City College, Du Junhao, shared an apartment with his friend Li Jiajun, who worked as a courier and delivered orders on an electric bike. He regularly charged the battery from the vehicle at home, despite his friend's warnings that it could be dangerous. Eventually, one day, the device caught fire, spreading acrid smoke throughout the house.
Li managed to escape the building, but Du was unable to do so and suffered severe burns in the fire. Doctors also had to amputate two fingers on his left hand.
"My parents had to borrow money from everywhere to save me, and they suffered pain while donating their skin to me," Junhao said.
The victim's family has already spent $380,000 on his treatment and also sued Li and the manufacturer of electric bike batteries, but to no avail. Du's friend's family only paid $1,400, saying they had no more money.
Jiajun himself was arrested for the crime of negligence causing serious bodily harm, a crime punishable by a maximum of three years in prison under Chinese law.
