35 tons of cocaine seized in Germany (4 photos)
Local media have already dubbed this event as “the largest seizure of cocaine in German history.”
Well, yes, you can’t argue with that, 35 tons is no joke, especially since this pile was valued at 30 billion euros.
Investigators spent a long time and painstakingly developing this operation and conducted raids in seven federal states. Seven people were arrested and they cheerfully reported the biggest blow to date on the cocaine trade.
“Dozens of tons of cocaine worth several billion euros were seized from circulation,” said the State Criminal Police Office of Baden-Württemberg and the Customs Investigation Office in Stuttgart, as well as the Düsseldorf prosecutor’s office.
The drugs were discovered last year in the port of Hamburg. All this time, operational activities were carried out to identify the owners of this “wealth”. As a result, the gang was caught, arrests took place in Bonn, Cologne, Leverkusen, the district of Rhine-Sieg and Wachtberg in North Rhine-Westphalia, in the capital of Bavaria Munich, in Berlin and Hamburg, in the Brandenburg district of Märkisch-Oderland, in Heidekreis in Lower Saxony and in Frankfurt in Hesse am Main. Authorities want to provide details of the investigation at a press conference in Dusseldorf on Monday.
There was so much cocaine that it was transported to a secret location and guarded.
“Since 2017, the volume of cocaine seized in Germany has increased significantly,” says the BKA in its latest drug crime report, published in October. In 2018, authorities discovered just five tons. And in 2022, the volume of seized drugs was already 20 tons. Most cocaine enters Germany through container ports from South America, as well as Bremerhaven and especially Hamburg.
