A former public school employee in Tipton County, Tennessee, has been sentenced to 25 years in prison on multiple counts of child rape. She got pregnant and gave birth to a child by one of the victims.

The actions of Alyssa McCommon, 38, who taught fourth- and fifth-graders at two schools in the Memphis suburb of Covington, have been under investigation since 2021. She was arrested last September after complaints from one of the children's mothers.

According to investigators, more than 20 children aged 12 to 17 may have fallen victim to the teacher. The mothers of five of the victims testified against her in court.

The boy to whom McCommon told of her pregnancy and threatened to commit suicide if he stopped communicating was 12 years old at the time of the rape. His mother admitted that she "loved the woman as a relative and opened the doors of her home to her."

"You took my son's innocence before puberty, took what should have been a wonderful experience, and tainted it. You are sick and twisted if you get aroused by looking at a child," the victim's mother testified in court.

The woman told investigators that McCommon had called her son more than 200 times, played video games with him, and sent him inappropriate messages.

As WREG reports, the baby, carried by the teacher, was given to the student's mother to raise. A DNA test confirmed his paternity. The grandmother noted that "the child will be loved and raised away from the influence" of his biological mother.

"There is no punishment that can be given to you that will compare to what God will punish you with. You will burn in hell," the woman said in court.

As part of the plea deal, McCommon was sentenced to 25 years in prison for rape, eight years each for two other counts of statutory rape (i.e., sex with a minor, regardless of consent), and two years each for several other counts.

She will serve her sentence without parole. After her sentence, she will be required to register with the sex offender registry and report to probation for life.

Law & Crime notes that while briefly out on bail last year, McCommon immediately contacted one of her victims using a code word to ask her children if anyone was monitoring their correspondence before sending her explicit photos. After that incident, she was arrested again and held pending trial.
