Jose de Alencar Lima died while speedgliding, an extreme sport that combines elements of paragliding and skydiving. The tragedy occurred in Pedra Bonita in Sao Conrado, Brazil, on Sunday morning.
The footage shows the 49-year-old military veteran running off a cliff, but his parachute barely opens. Onlookers are left in horror as the man disappears.
According to authorities, Lima, who served as a paratrooper in the Brazilian army, fell from a height of about 250 meters onto rocks. Rescuers searched for four hours until they found his lifeless body.
Witnesses said the man tripped before his fatal jump.
The police are currently investigating, and there is speculation that the equipment may have been faulty.
The experienced skydiving instructor lived in Germany but came to Brazil to see his family.
"We don't know what could have happened. But he had been a professional skydiver for 20 years, he had a lot of experience," the relative said, adding that she didn't know if Jose had jumped from Pedra Bonita before.
Paragliding and similar activities in Pedra Bonita are carried out from a specific ramp area, access to which is regulated by the Sao Conrado de Voo Livre Club (CSCLV). Its certified instructors ensure safety and a fun time in the sky.
According to CSCLV, Lima climbed Pedra Bonita by a roundabout route.
"He did not use the ramp. The place he chose for the jump was unsuitable and even prohibited. CSCLV does not bear responsibility for this incident."
