24-year-old Brva Schorsch pushed 61-year-old Tadeusz Potoczek at Oxford Circus station in central London. The Kurd claimed he was taking revenge on the stranger for "looking sideways".
Potoczek, a postman, was walking along the platform when Schorsch got up from a bench and pushed him. Tadeusz almost touched the rails, but an onlooker helped him out.
The driver of the approaching train told the court: "If he had been on the tracks a few seconds later, he would have died."
Potoček was rushing home and looking at the board when he was attacked. Luckily, the driver applied the emergency brake.
Oliver Matthews, who pulled the victim to safety, said Schorsch shouted: "What the f**k are you doing this for?"
The homeless migrant told the court that he wanted revenge: that day, three women laughed at him, and he thought a passerby gave him a sideways glance. Schorsch added that Potocek treated him very disrespectfully, and he did not know the train was approaching.
He pleaded not guilty to attempted murder: "Yes, I did a terrible thing. He made me angry, but I had no intention of killing. I regret what happened."
Potocek admitted that he was afraid of losing his life and understood that stopping a train is not the same as stopping a bicycle.
On August 1, the jury returned a guilty verdict.
Shorsh had been living on the streets of London since 2020, often sleeping in tube stations.
After the verdict was announced, Sam Barker, prosecuting, said the defendant had a history of violence against tube staff.
