On October 10, New York City resident Asia Rodriguez noticed her son choking on vomit and immediately called 911. Two police officers soon arrived and provided aid to 10-month-old Makai.
The quick actions of two New York City Police Department officers saved the baby's life. Both were rookies with less than two years of service.
The footage shows officers crossing the threshold, and the frightened parents immediately hand over their son. The officer places Makai on his knee and slaps him hard on the back.
"He's okay, he's okay," the officer finally says.
Makai began to cry, and the officers picked him up to calm him down.
It's worth noting that the little boy was wearing a jumpsuit with a police car on it.
The boy was immediately taken to Elmhurst Hospital Center for an examination, where no health issues were found.
Makai's parents expressed their deep gratitude to the emergency services.
"If I had the chance to meet them and hug them, I would," said his mother, Asia Rodriguez. "God bless them. My son is alive because of them."
His father, Brandon Loboy, added: "They saved his life. Their professionalism is invaluable in times like these."
All 30,000-plus New York City police officers are required to undergo first aid training. A law passed in 2017 requires them to retake the course every two years.
When a child under one year old begins to choke, doctors recommend turning them on their stomach and sharply hitting their back. If they lose consciousness after several hits, CPR is required.
