The skin on Maria Zhampacheva’s body grows seven times faster than normal, tightens and tears due to constant inflammation.
Doctors diagnosed the young woman with a genetic skin disease called ichthyosis (or "fish scale disease"), which rarely occurs in such an extreme form.
The skin on Maria’s body grows seven times faster than normal, tightens and tears due to constant inflammation.
“I can’t stand, walk or sit for a long time without feeling unbearable pain,” says the mother of two children (14 and 5 years old), who lives near the border with Saxony in Litvinov.
A woman cannot get a job, because any mechanical damage leads to the appearance of a blister.
According to doctors, Maria’s disease cannot be treated; the pain can only be partially relieved with the help of special care. A woman spends up to five hours a day on this.
“Every month I need up to 10 kilograms of cream. It costs about 500 euros. I spend another 300 euros on bandages and sanitary towels,” she adds, noting that she covers all the costs of treatment thanks to her husband Michal, who works in the field logistics.
Her boyfriend even bought her a sander from a DIY store to remove rough layers of skin.
"I have been an outsider since childhood. Others treated me with disgust. They didn’t even allow me to go to kindergarten because they thought I was contagious. And still sometimes they greet me with disgust, but not everyone. There are those who admire that I can live with this and be open,” says Maria.
