Drug-addicted dogs caught in Vancouver (3 photos)
This wasn't a swear word aimed at two-legged lovers of all things nasty, but real news from overseas.
In early September, three pit bulls jumped over a fence and mauled a neighbor's 12-year-old border collie. It was a trivial news story, like "A girl dropped a sausage," and while that's true, there's one small nuance.
When the frenzied dogs were captured, veterinarians noted that their behavior didn't resemble rabies or simple aggression. Out of curiosity, and perhaps in search of a new zombie virus, they took samples. The results surprised everyone. The dogs' blood contained significant amounts of cocaine and methamphetamine. All three animals.
The city's press release stated that "the seized dogs cannot be safely rehabilitated and cannot be subject to safety measures that would ensure public safety and prevent future injury to people or animals."
The third dog was not captured on camera.
Kamloops Community Relations Manager Will Beattie stated that the documents for the euthanization of the drug-addicted dogs are currently being compiled. Beattie said the city is going to court to obtain a permit to destroy the animals, and neither the police nor the SPCA have proven any charges against the owner.
However, it's impossible to determine how the drugs entered the animals' systems. It's impossible to know if they were found on the street.
The area where the attack occurred.
Daria Evans, manager of the Kamloops Animal Shelter, said in an interview that there have been instances over the years of dogs and cats being caught under the influence of drugs, but such incidents are rare and occur perhaps once a year.
