Tourist's Last Selfie with a Teddy Bear (3 photos)
A tourist who was taking a photo with a bear cub in Romania became a victim of the bear the next day. Italian Omar Farang Zin was riding a motorcycle along the Transfagarasan Highway in the Carpathians when the bear attacked him and dragged him into a ravine. Eyewitnesses reported the incident to emergency services, and an hour later the mangled body of the 49-year-old man was found.
The day before the tragedy, Zin, traveling through beautiful places in the center of Arges, took photos and videos of bears and posted them on social networks.
In one of the videos, he says: "Here's a bear. How beautiful! He's coming towards me."
The traveler also posted a selfie in which he smiles and points to a bear cub on the side of the road.
According to some reports, the next day the motorcyclist returned to the same area where he met the mother bear with her cubs. He was never seen alive again.
Romanian authorities reported that they had euthanized the predator.
Romania has the second largest population of these animals in Europe. According to the latest data, up to 13 thousand bears may live in the mountainous regions.
Bears rarely attack humans. According to the World Wildlife Fund, the predators attack about 40 people every year.
Over the past two decades, bears have killed about 30 people in Romania, 19 of them in the past five years.
Shortly before Zin's death, the bear pulled a girl off a hiking trail and threw her into a gorge in the Bucegi Mountains in front of her terrified boyfriend. Meanwhile, last year in Arges County, a bear attacked a 72-year-old British tourist who had rolled down her window to take a photo.
Last year, Romanian authorities captured 481 bears due to a rise in incidents. Tourists are also advised to take precautions to minimize the risk of attacks.
"The problem is not that there are too many bears. More and more animals are getting used to people and seeing them as a source of food," said Christian Papp of the World Wildlife Fund.
