Billy Owen's profession: zombie (10 photos)

8 March 2026

Even if someone claims to hate zombie movies, they're being disingenuous. And they most likely dream of finding themselves in the epicenter of a zombie apocalypse. Among those fighting the living dead, of course.

This guy wasn't lucky enough to join the zombie army itself. Literally. Although, whether Billy Owen was lucky or unlucky is debatable.

Back in 2009, a man worked as a mechanic, enjoyed motorcycles, and was enjoying his new role as a father: his beloved wife had given birth to a son six months earlier.

His happy and fulfilling life was marred only by a persistent runny nose. Doctors diagnosed him with a simple sinus infection, but when his right nostril became completely blocked and headaches became a constant companion, Billy's wife became seriously concerned and referred him to other specialists.

The diagnosis, which the man received on February 13, 2009, was disappointing: sinonasal undifferentiated carcinoma, a rare form of cancer affecting the nasal cavity. The survival rate for this type is only 10 percent.

Typically, when the disease is diagnosed early, only the tumor itself is removed. But in Owen's case, the disease had progressed too far. Part of his nasopharynx, the roof of his mouth, and his right eye were removed, along with the muscles and nerves of half his face.

Such dramatic changes in his appearance also left a serious mark on his worldview. A man who, before the operation, rode a motorcycle without much regard for safety and was not averse to a drink, completely reconsidered his worldview and decided to live for his wife and child.

Of course, motorcycle riding remained a part of his life in moderation. But he had to give up his career as a mechanic:

It's too much of a risk. I can do it for myself, but if someone else dies because I overlooked a bolt, I don't know what I'll do.

And Owen clearly saw a new purpose – to change his life for the better, using his changed appearance. Owen began acting in music videos and films, where his distinctive appearance was especially useful. He also worked at haunted houses, including the Horetorium, a horror maze in Las Vegas.

According to Todd Ray, show manager of the Venice Beach Freakshow, Owen inspired others with his strength and resilience. Instead of being embarrassed by his missing eye, Owen used it to have fun and share his story. His courage and optimism in the face of adversity are admirable.

Owen appreciated the attention and the opportunity to share his journey. Appearing on the reality show "Freakshow" allowed him to reach a wider audience with his message of positivity. Although Owen missed his job as a mechanic, he found newfound satisfaction in supporting his family financially through unique entertainment performances.

Billy Owen's cancer story illustrates the resilience of the human spirit. Although the illness and surgery forever changed Owen physically, he didn't let it defeat him mentally or emotionally. By pursuing new hobbies, such as zombie acting, Owen found self-confidence and purpose.

He turned adversity into an opportunity to inspire others facing life's challenges. Owen's transformation underscores the ability to self-actualize even after profound loss. His relentless positivity and devotion to his family are a testament to the fact that even in life's darkest moments, there is light at the end of the tunnel.
