Athlete wins competition despite having diarrhea
A 20-year-old Australian athlete had a bowel movement during an endurance competition. Her bowel contents soiled her clothes, the track, and the equipment.
This news is not for reading at the dinner table. In Beijing, a sports track had to be disinfected after one of the athletes.
It all happened during HYROX—an international competition that combines running and functional exercises. Australian athlete Joanna Wietrzyk experienced bowel issues, but despite this, she continued the course and finished first in her category. On her social media, she wrote, "A win is a win."
After the race, the organizers sanitized the track: they replaced part of the surface and thoroughly cleaned the equipment. Footage from the competition spread across social media and sparked widespread discussion.
Some online admired the athlete's perseverance, but others felt she should have been stopped for hygiene and safety reasons.
