A woman locked up by her parents for 27 years was rescued in Poland (5 photos)
Mirella was just 15 years old when she suddenly disappeared in 1998 in the town of Świętochłowice in southern Poland. Her parents reported their daughter missing to neighbors. It was only a couple of months ago that the shocking truth was revealed.
In July, police came to the apartment after a noise complaint. The 82-year-old woman claimed nothing unusual was happening. But officers discovered an exhausted Mirella and called paramedics.
According to eyewitnesses, she looked very ill, and her legs seemed numb.
The 42-year-old woman was rushed to the hospital, where doctors discovered she was on the verge of death due to an infection.
The shocking case only came to light now, after local residents began raising funds for her treatment.
One of the organizers wrote: "Doctors said that a couple more days and she would have died. She has been in the hospital for two months due to her serious condition. People who knew Mirella thought she left home almost 30 years ago. But the reality turned out to be different. It's impossible to imagine how she lived all these years in one room. She admits that she didn't see how her city changed and missed so much. She's never been to a doctor, doesn't have a passport, and hasn't gone for a walk or even onto the balcony. Mirella has never been to the dentist or hairdresser."
A friend said: "It's incredible! I remember Mirella as a teenager. We often played near the house when I visited my grandmother on vacation. And then she suddenly disappeared under mysterious circumstances."
Authorities are currently investigating. It is not yet known what punishment awaits Mirella's parents. ![]()
