On May 16 at around 11pm, Raisa Sawati heard the sound of broken dishes in the kitchen. She went inside and was confronted by an unknown person who had broken into her home in Newton Heath, Manchester. The shirtless man threatened the 37-year-old doctor with a knife, a frying pan and scissors.
The man had broken into the house through a window in the kitchen.
Sawati recalled: “That evening I was in the bedroom and I heard someone talking loudly on the phone. I looked out the window and saw a half-naked man. He pointed at me, but I didn't react. I thought he was mistaken and mistook me for someone else. The next moment I heard a noise. It was the crash and clatter of falling dishes. He was standing in my kitchen with a knife, then he picked up a frying pan."
Sawati locked the stranger in the kitchen, but he opened the door and followed her into the living room.
"I tried to persuade him to put down the weapon," she said. "He was talking nonsense, and his eyes seemed completely swollen - I had never seen anything like that before."
"I tried to get him out by opening the door, but he stayed. Then I went upstairs to get help, and he followed me. He was waiting for me with scissors."
"I locked myself in the bedroom, he was breaking in. I managed to call 999. It seemed like forever in the bedroom."
Six minutes later, police arrived at the house and arrested the intruder. He has been charged with aggravated burglary.
CCTV cameras in the house captured the incident.
Police can be heard shouting at the man to stop resisting and come down immediately.
Sawati tells officers: "I don't know who he is. He climbed through the window and took out a knife. He started chasing me, I kept telling him to put the knife down, but he wouldn't."
Forensic experts took evidence from the house, including a kitchen knife, scissors and a frying pan.

"The last thing you expect is to lose your sense of security in your own home. When he pulled out the knife, all I could think about was being killed or raped, and nothing could stop him," Raisa admitted.
