What should have been an exciting spectacle at the annual Chestival fair held by the University of Chester in the UK turned out to be an ordeal for visitors. The Superstar ride, moving at high speed, began to fall apart and a hail of debris flew down. Several people were injured.
The incident happened on March 27 at the annual Chester fair at the University of Chester, where 19-year-old Caitlin Colclough studies. Her friend captured the terrifying moment when part of the Superstar ride Caitlin was riding broke off and shattered into shards of glass.
One of the students caught in the debris was 19-year-old Caitlin Colclough from Kidsgrove, who was rushed to hospital. Caitlin was hit by a large flying panel, causing her to suffer a concussion and whiplash injury to her neck.
According to the girl's mother, Mandy, she could not hold back her tears while watching the video.
“The piece hit them, but the ride continued to work,” she marvels. “I thought there should be an emergency stop in such cases.”
Mandy also criticizes the management of the university and the students' union, claiming that they did not provide any support to her daughter in connection with the incident. We limited ourselves to an official reply.
Fortunately, a CT scan showed that Caitlin had no serious injuries and would recover quickly. Doctors assure that the consequences of a concussion - blurred vision, severe headaches, dizziness, nausea - will pass in a few weeks.
Here is the official message from Chester Students' Union:
"On Wednesday 27 March at Chestival (an event organized by Chester Students' Union at Exton Park Campus) there was an incident involving a ride and the ride was closed immediately. Two students were taken to hospital as a precaution and discharged the same day. Students' Union and "The university's wellbeing team have been in close contact with students to offer them support. The incident has been reported to the HSE (Health and Safety Executive) so that the attraction operator can be dealt with if necessary."
The Health and Safety Executive has reportedly launched an investigation into the incident.
