No one should be more beautiful than me: A political science major drowned her children out of envy (4 photos)

19 December 2025

In the Indian state of Haryana, there lives a woman who would be the perfect subject for a criminology textbook: thirty-two years old, with a master's degree with honors, a bachelor's degree in education, and an impeccable reputation in the village.

Her name is Poonam. She never raised her voice, always helped her neighbors, and congratulated relatives with a smile at weddings. A housewife, married to a farmer, and the mother of two boys, no one was surprised when she offered to babysit for other people's children. Comfortable, peaceful, and educated—a perfect option.

But behind this screen lurked a real serial killer with a rather intriguing motive. Over the course of two years, Poonam drowned four children. First, her nine-year-old niece and her own three-year-old son. Carefully, she drowned them in the family's water tank to make it look like an accident. Then, she drowned her six-year-old cousin in her mother's village.

Finally, in early December 2025, at a large wedding, she took six-year-old Vidhi "to play," took her to the bathroom, filled the plastic bathtub to the brim, and calmly left, locking the door from the outside. She returned to the guests, danced, ate sweets, and took photos. The next morning, Poonam's grandmother found the body, and she was already crying heartily along with everyone else.

"The room where the dead child was found was locked from the outside. The girl's grandfather, Pal Singh, a retired sub-inspector, was the first to suspect foul play. He claimed the child had been deliberately drowned. His suspicions led to an investigation that ultimately implicated Poonam," local police reported.

During interrogation, she explained everything very rationally: "I won't let anyone grow up more beautiful than me." A political science major meticulously pored over family albums, selecting the cutest girls and methodically eliminating the competition before they grew up. Each murder was planned for months: where the child would be, who would believe it was an accident, how to console the parents later.

The police called her a "high-functioning psychopath." Her relatives still can't believe it: "She's so smart." Yes, that's why it all happened four times. So, it's like an Indian version of the evil queen.
