Italy in shock: mother confesses to dismembering son (6 photos)

An Italian woman who killed and dismembered her son claims she was acting in defense of her daughter-in-law. The remains of 35-year-old Alessandro Venier were found in a trash bin outside his home in Gemona del Friuli, Udine province.

The man's body was covered with quicklime to hide the smell of decomposition. According to investigators, he was dismembered into three parts.

Nurse Lorena Venier, 61, told prosecutors: "I did something terrible."

She said her son had been abusive to her and his Colombian girlfriend, 30-year-old Mylin Castro Monsalvo, who gave birth to his daughter six months ago.

Alessandro had drug and alcohol problems. He did not work or help around the house, which he shared with his mother and Mylin.

The man intended to move his family to Colombia.

At the hearing on August 2, Lorena said: "Mylin is the daughter I never had. Mylin was abused, insulted and threatened. My son did not pay attention to her postpartum depression. Alessandro was cruel, and Mylene's life was in danger. I couldn't let Mylene and the baby go to Colombia. They were in grave danger there. The only way to stop him was to kill him."

Mylene participated in the murder that took place on July 25. The women mixed a tranquilizer into lemonade and gave it to Alessandro. When that didn't work, Lorena injected her son with two doses of insulin that she had received at the hospital where she worked. An overdose can lead to a coma, permanent brain damage, and even death.

Despite a large dose of insulin, the man was still alive. It is believed he was strangled with his own shoe laces.

Lorena told police: "I took care of the dismemberment myself. I cut him into three pieces."

She hoped that her son would go unnoticed. Neighbors might think that he had gone to South America without his girlfriend and daughter. However, Mylene confessed to everything herself, and the women were arrested. Lorena is accused of murder and concealment of the body, her daughter-in-law is accused of incitement.

The news has rocked the city. Mayor Roberto Revelan said: "Nothing like this has ever happened here before. It's a terrible, heartbreaking case."

An autopsy is currently underway and the women will be formally charged in the coming days.

The six-month-old girl has been taken into care. The mayor added: "The whole community has rallied around the little girl. We are working with social services to make sure she is safe."
