A woman sentenced to six years for a crime she did not commit died two months after her acquittal. Twenty-six-year-old Damaris Vitoria Cremer da Rosa died on October 26 from cervical cancer, diagnosed while in prison.
In August 2019, Damaris was arrested for her alleged involvement in the murder of Daniel Gomes Soveral.
Daniel died in November 2018 in Salto do Jaques, Brazil. He was shot, and his body was then burned.
Prosecutors alleged that Damaris, along with other defendants, planned the murder and maintained a fictitious relationship with the victim to lure her to the execution site.

Damaris's lawyers claimed she merely told her fiancé that 34-year-old Daniel had raped her. He acted alone in avenging his beloved.
During her detention, Damaris was moved between prisons. She frequently complained of health problems, including vaginal bleeding and abdominal pain. Her defense repeatedly requested her release, but was denied.
The Rio Grande do Sul State Court ruled there was insufficient evidence of her illness. The medical documents presented were found to lack a diagnosis and examinations.
Damaris was released only on March 18 of this year. She was diagnosed with malignant cervical cancer.
She was placed under house arrest at her mother's home. An electronic ankle monitor was attached. In April, she began chemotherapy and radiation therapy.
Damaris's attorney, Rebeca Canabarro, requested that the bracelet be removed, but her requests went unanswered. She was subjected to X-rays and other tests without removing the device.
A jury heard Damaris's case in August. On August 13, she was acquitted of two charges: murder and arson.
Damaris died 74 days later; her funeral was held on October 27. She is survived by her parents, Claudette and Adhemar, two brothers, and her boyfriend, businessman and radio host Allen Silva. ![]()
