Passenger hits flight attendant when asked to turn off phone (11 photos + 1 video)
On August 10, an incident occurred on a domestic flight from Lagos, Nigeria, to Uyo. Ibom Air flight attendants asked a passenger to turn off her phone while the plane was taxiing to the runway. The woman became angry.
Electronic devices can interfere with aircraft communications and navigation during key stages of flight, including takeoff. Turning off devices allows the crew to communicate with air traffic controllers and avoid distractions that could endanger the safety of passengers. However, the passenger did not respond to the request. She insisted that she could simply turn on airplane mode.
When the noise started, the pilot refused to continue the flight and returned to the Murtala Muhammed International Airport terminal. The passenger was escorted out of the cabin, but at the door she slapped the flight attendant.
In the footage, the employee calmly says: "She's hitting me. She's fucking hitting me." Meanwhile, her assailant is screaming, "What have you done?"
The woman puts on her jacket and is escorted off the plane with her luggage. Ground staff and security meet her at the ramp, and a scuffle ensues.
The uncontrollable passenger screams and fights, waving her bag. At some point, her wig flies off her head. The troublemaker is pushed into the bus, but she doesn't calm down there either.

Michael Achimugu, Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection at the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority, said the incident occurred after the passenger failed to comply with the instructions of the cabin crew. He reminded passengers to listen to the requests of the cabin crew, especially when it comes to routine safety procedures such as turning off phones during takeoff and landing.
“When cabin crew asks you to turn off your phone, just do as they say. I cannot understand why simple routine questions can lead to such incidents. Passengers should understand that they have responsibilities, not just rights."
