Throwed off a boat: a young fisherman drowned after catching a giant fish on a hook (3 photos)
Allax Melo lost his balance and fell overboard, ending up underwater. In an instant, a strong current quickly pulled him under.
In Brazil, 23-year-old Allax Melo died in an accident on the Aragua River when he drowned after falling from a boat while trying to pull a huge red-tailed catfish out of the water.
The incident occurred near the village of Itxala in Santa Terezinha, where Melo was fishing with two friends.
According to eyewitnesses, Melo, who had caught the fish on the hook, began to reel in the line, but the weight of the catch was too great. Losing his balance, he fell overboard and soon found himself underwater, where a strong current quickly pulled him in. His friends tried to save him, but the river was too turbulent.
A rescue operation began after the police were called, but due to the onset of darkness, the search was suspended until the morning. Melo's body was found only the next day, after which it was sent to the local coroner's office for an autopsy.
The Mato Grosso State Civil Police has launched an investigation into the incident.
The publication notes that red-tailed catfish, which are found in the Amazon basin and other large rivers of South America, can reach 1.8 meters in length and weigh up to 82 kilograms, which makes them dangerous for fishermen.
