Residents of the German city of Solingen celebrated a milestone date last Friday - 650 years since the city's founding. But the festive event ended in a bloody drama, and the criminal is still at large.
The celebration of the 650th anniversary of the city of Solingen began on Friday with the "Festival of Diversity". The city holiday was supposed to last until Sunday, but everything did not go according to plan.
The tragedy occurred in the midst of the festival in the center of Solingen. About 10,000 people were present, many gathered around the live music stage on the Frohnhof market square in the city center.
A random guy, resembling an Arab, simply pulled out a knife and went on the attack. As a result, he stabbed one woman and two men, and five more people were taken to a nearby hospital with serious injuries.
After which he calmly disappeared into the crowd. Eyewitnesses reported that the alleged perpetrator headed towards the main street.
The perpetrator is still at large. "We currently have no information about his whereabouts," a police spokesman said.
Mayor Tim Kurzbach wrote on Facebook* that the people of Solingen are "shocked, horrified and very sad."
"We all wanted to celebrate our city's anniversary together, and now we have to mourn the dead and wounded. My heart breaks that our city was attacked. It brings tears to my eyes when I think about those we have lost. I pray for all those who are still fighting for their lives." He also expressed his condolences to those who witnessed the attack, "those must have been terrible moments."
Just a few days before this bloody holiday, Federal Minister of the Interior Nancy Feiser announced her intention to tighten the rules for carrying bladed weapons. If previously it was possible to carry knives with a 12 cm blade in public places, now it was planned to consider allowing only six-centimeter blades.
After such harsh news, knife manufacturers and sellers were alarmed. They expect a drop in sales and are worried about their stocks.
