In Germany, a nurse killed 10 patients due to heavy workload (4 photos)
In Germany, a nurse took the lives of patients to make his job easier. On November 5, the unnamed perpetrator was sentenced to life imprisonment. He was found guilty of murdering 10 elderly patients by lethal injection.
He was also found guilty of the attempted murder of 27 others.
At trial, the prosecution claimed that the nurse sought to make his job easier by administering a mixture of painkillers and sedatives to the elderly patients.
The murders took place in the palliative care unit of Aachen Hospital between December 2023 and May 2024.
Although the man was sentenced to life imprisonment, under German law he could be released after 15 years. However, due to the seriousness of his actions, this is unlikely.
According to Agence France-Presse (AFP), the man had worked at the hospital since 2020, having completed his nursing training in 2007. He displayed irritation and even indifference toward patients who needed special care, and felt like a "master of life and death."
The court was told that before his arrest in 2024, he administered large doses of morphine and midazolam to patients.
Exhumations will be conducted to search for other possible victims.
Surprisingly, the most prolific serial killer in German history is also a nurse. 42-year-old Nils Högel was sentenced to life imprisonment by the Oldenburg District Court after it was established that he had murdered 85 patients.
The judge said Högel's actions were "incomprehensible: that's the word that describes what happened." At his sentencing, the nurse apologized.
