Asher Watkins, 52, was hunting a buffalo nicknamed Black Death in Bambisana Game Reserve, South Africa, on Sunday when the 1.3-tonne animal suddenly lunged at him and knocked him down at 35 mph (56 km/h). He was killed almost instantly.

Asher's ex-wife, Courtney, said their teenage daughter was in shock: "It's hard to put into words. It's especially hard for Savannah, who is grieving for her father. We are in shock, we are devastated. We are trying to cope not only with the loss, but also with all the difficulties that come with it."

Asher, a Texas rancher, believed that hunting was an important part of preserving wildlife. His social media feeds are filled with photos of him with pumas and other kills. He shared how he killed thousands of pigeons with friends in Argentina over three days.

Coenraad Vermaak Safaris expressed their condolences: "It is with great sadness that we announce the tragic loss of our client and friend, Asher Watkins from the USA. Asher was fatally injured in a sudden and unprovoked buffalo attack while we were hunting in Limpopo on Sunday. This is a terrible incident and our hearts go out to his loved ones. We are doing everything we can to support the family members who are here with us and those who remain in the United States."

Usher's mother Gwen, brother Amon, and stepfather Tony were waiting for him at the lodge at the time of the incident.

A close friend of the hunter shared: "Usher was always there for Savannah. He shared every free minute, every moment of his life with her. No one loved her more than he did."

Watkins owned the Watkins Ranch Group, which sold exclusive ranches.

Friend Shannon Wherry wrote on social media: “While on safari in Africa with his beloved mother, brother, and stepfather, Asher came face to face with one of Africa’s legendary buffalos. He took the challenge head on, leaving this world a man of courage, faith, and adventure.”

African buffalos are powerful animals that can weigh 1.5 tons and stand 1.7 meters at the shoulder. They are unpredictable and aggressive, and their only enemies are humans and lions.

The safari website says: “The African buffalo is one of the most dangerous animals on the planet, causing several deaths each year. Hunting buffalo is an exciting experience and tops every hunter’s bucket list. Cunning and warlike, they hide in the bush to escape injury and threats. Buffaloes attack suddenly, so be prepared for the worst.”
