The last reported shark attack in the area of Texas was five years ago, according to authorities.
The incident occurred during the Independence Day celebrations in the United States. Locals and tourists were celebrating the holiday on the shore and actively swimming in what they thought was a safe sea. According to the International Shark Attack Registry, which is maintained by the University of Florida, there have been fewer than 10 shark bites in Texas since 2012.
Moreover, all the victims did not swim far out to sea. An 18-year-old girl and her sister were in shallow water, knee-deep in water near the shore, when a shark attacked them. The victim noted that they noticed the shark only when it was already near them.
On the same day, a man was bitten, also in shallow water, when eyewitnesses rushed to help him, the shark managed to bite one of them, fortunately the wound was not serious.
The predator was driven further out to sea with the help of a Texas Department of Public Safety helicopter. It flew low over the water and managed to drive the shark away, as well as make a video.
On the same day, sharks also attacked residents of Florida. Off New Smyrna Beach, a shark bit a 26-year-old man on the left leg while he was swimming in an inflatable tube. The depth at that place was less than five feet.
The bite comes nearly 24 hours after a 21-year-old Ohio man was bitten Thursday afternoon while playing football in knee-deep water at New Smyrna Beach, according to Volusia County Rescue.
Both men's injuries are not life-threatening.
