Coach assaulted referee at European Schoolboys Boxing Championships
The Azerbaijani team was immediately disqualified.
At the European Schools Boxing Championships, a coach became so dissatisfied with the refereeing that he lost control of himself, jumped into the ring, and attempted to strangle the referee. The incident reportedly occurred yesterday, Monday, during the final bout between Serbian Viktor Majstorovic and Azerbaijani Yusif Agakishiev.
The latter, judging by the footage, was actively and successfully leading the fight. It can be assumed that the coach, confident of his charge's victory, lost his temper when the referee "saves" him from Majstorovic's barrage of punches. This theory is plausible, as the championship is being held in Serbia, and referee Stefan Kubalevski is from North Macedonia. This will likely be the primary justification offered by the Azerbaijani media. However, such outrageous behavior is not encouraged anywhere, including in sports.
As for the official side, the referee stopped the fight to reprimand the Azerbaijani boxer for striking with the open side of his gloves.
After the frantic coach rushed into the ring and grabbed the referee by the throat, members of both teams ran in and quickly broke up the brawl. Due to the coach's outburst, the bout was stopped, and the refereeing panel decided to disqualify the Azerbaijani team. The gold medal was ultimately awarded to the Serb. Furthermore, the organizers of the European Championship and the European Boxing Federation are now planning to impose significant penalties against the violators.
