A Polish tourist died of exhaustion in Bali after starving herself to death due to a raw food diet (8 photos)
In the final days of her life, 27-year-old Karolina weighed approximately 23 kilograms.
Karolina Krzyzak died tragically in Bali, a victim of the extremes of the fruitarian diet—a diet that completely excludes animal and processed foods, as well as vegetables. The foundation of the fruitarian diet is exclusively raw fruit.
After moving from Warsaw to the UK to study at the University of Leeds, the 19-year-old became interested in yoga and initially became a vegan. On her social media pages, she described how veganism "opened her eyes." She began posting photos of smoothie bowls and hosting livestreams, during which followers complimented her "beautiful neck and collarbones."
Over the years, Karolina's diet became increasingly restricted: from classic veganism, she transitioned to a raw food diet, and then to fruitarianism. She eliminated all foods other than fruit from her diet and began traveling to tropical countries to eat organic food.
Her abnormal diet led to an eating disorder, and at her parents' insistence, she returned to Warsaw in 2018 for inpatient treatment. However, she subsequently switched back to a raw food diet.
According to media reports, by eating only fruit, Caroline was depriving herself of vital proteins, amino acids, vitamin B12, iron, and calcium—all of which led to severe malnutrition.
Several months before the tragedy, the girl was already suffering from overt symptoms: yellowed nails, brittle teeth, hair loss, premature graying, osteoporosis, and swelling in her legs due to a severe protein deficiency. Despite her parents' reassurances and attempts at treatment for anorexia, Carolina returned to dangerous behavior—her online environment became an echo chamber: radical dieters encouraged weight loss, while any warning signs were ignored.
In Bali, where she had come to join the fruitarian community, Carolina refused medical help, trusting entirely in her beliefs and the advice she received from social media. Even her new friends noticed that she ate very little, even though fruitarians don't restrict themselves in the amount of food they eat.
The staff at the hotel where Caroline checked in were shocked by her appearance: she had difficulty moving and soon became unable to get out of bed on her own. A few days after moving in, she was found dead in her room. The cause of death was determined to be critical exhaustion, organ failure, and prolonged starvation.
Carolina's story exemplifies the dangerous consequences of the extremes of modernized dietary practices and the destructive influence of online communities that can endorse and reinforce poor life choices.
