The incident took place in Bhubaneswar. There, a 19-month-old boy was abducted from near the Ram temple but was soon rescued by the police. The child was found in the suspect's house in Balasore, where he was being kept. The man himself has a child with kidney problems, raising questions about the possible motive behind the crime.
The police are actively investigating the case and are interrogating the suspect to establish the exact reasons for the abduction.
"The child is safe and the motive behind the crime is being ascertained," a senior police officer said.
The boy's mother, Jayanti Mallick, who begs near the temple, said the abduction took place around 3 a.m. when she was sleeping next to her children, a 4-year-old daughter and son. A stranger approached them and offered the children juice.
Due to her poor eyesight, Mallick was unable to see the man clearly, but she believed him when he said he loved children and had brought them treats. Soon she heard her son crying.
"My daughter did not explain anything when I asked why my brother was crying. The man also did not respond. I called for help, but no one was around at that late hour. Thanks to the police for returning my child," the mother said.
