A Georgian judoka broke his opponent's jaw after losing the match
Georgian judoka Akaki Japaridze attacked German 2024 Olympian Timo Cavelius and broke his jaw after losing a bout at a tournament in Germany. The athlete now faces severe sanctions, up to a lifetime ban from competition.
The incident occurred in the German Bundesliga. The 24-year-old Japaridze, competing for the JC Leipzig club, had a bout in Leipzig on Saturday against 29-year-old German Timo Cavelius of the TSV Abensberg team.
Following the defeat, Japaridze attacked his opponent, breaking his jaw and knocking out two teeth. Cavelius, a participant in the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, was hospitalized and underwent surgery that same evening.
It is noted that the Georgian judoka's attack was preceded by a provocative victory gesture from his opponent.
Cavelius is ruled out for an extended period and will consequently miss the 2026 World Championships. German police are investigating the incident. Japaridze also faces a lifetime ban.
