A cobra bit a sleeping old woman in Thailand
Relatives rushed the victim to Phetchabun Hospital, where she was initially in serious condition and treated in intensive care.
Journalists who visited the scene described the house as a wooden structure raised on stilts with a concrete floor underneath. There was a cot on which the grandmother usually rested during the day. Behind the house was a vegetable garden and thickets of grass and trees; however, the area underneath the house was relatively clean.
The victim's grandson, 53-year-old Suwat Dikhanu, said that at the time of the incident, he was repairing a motor outside the house, 50 meters from the cot, while his wife was selling noodles at the entrance. They heard the grandmother scream for help. Approaching, Suwat saw bite marks on the middle finger of her left hand and tried to find the snake, but was unable to find it. Relatives immediately took the woman to the hospital.
Later, the relative contacted another grandson, who was monitoring the house through a CCTV camera, and learned that the attacking snake was a cobra approximately two meters long and almost as thick as a shoulder. Doctors were immediately notified.
Suvat noted that such cobras had never been seen in the area before. He said that when he ran up to the house, a toad jumped out at him. He suspects the snake may have been stalking the victim and accidentally crawled onto the bed, but the exact reason for its presence on the bed remains to be determined.
The grandmother's condition has currently improved: she has been disconnected from the ventilator and is breathing on her own. The bite caused swelling and bruising, and doctors made an incision to drain the blood and treat the wound. Doctors reported that, assuming there is no infection, the patient will likely be discharged in 2-3 days.
