A Brazilian woman poisoned her granddaughters with pie (4 photos)
59-year-old Isabel Cardoso de Andrade baked a deadly treat for her granddaughters, who were visiting her during the summer holidays. Nine-year-old Alana couldn't be saved, but her 11-year-old sister survived. Even the family cat died after tasting the pie.
On July 23, the grandmother fed her granddaughters pie. The girls began vomiting and complained of severe abdominal pain.
Alana began to bleed white fluid from her nose. The grandparents called a neighbor for help, and he took the girl to the hospital. However, shortly after arriving, she died of cardiopulmonary arrest.
Police discovered the cat had similar symptoms. Authorities took samples of the baked goods for analysis.
9-year-old Alana
Cardoza de Andrade was arrested on Friday, September 19. A forensic examination revealed the presence of terbufos, a toxic pesticide, in both the cake and Alana's body. This chemical affects the central nervous system, causing muscle weakness, seizures, difficulty breathing, and spasms. In high doses, it can lead to neurological damage and death.
The veterinarian determined that the cat died of liver failure. This suggests that poisoning could have been the cause of death.
The suspect's lawyer, Rafael Simón de Moraes Neto, said his client willingly cooperated with the investigation and allowed a search of her home. Police have not yet determined whether the poisoning was intentional or accidental, nor have they identified a motive. The investigation is ongoing.
Last month, Australian Erin Patterson received a life sentence for the murder of three relatives of her ex-husband. She served them beef Wellington with poisonous mushrooms.
