In the New York subway, Kamel Hawkins, 23, pushed a man onto the tracks in front of an oncoming train. He was arrested the same day and charged with attempted murder and assault, the New York Times (NYT) reports.
The victim, a 45-year-old man, survived and was hospitalized in critical condition.
The incident occurred around 1:30 a.m. Tuesday on the platform of the 18th Street station in Manhattan's Chelsea neighborhood. Video footage shows the suspect first walking past the victim, then returning and pushing him for no apparent reason.
According to eyewitnesses, the moment of the push was carefully calculated: the train was already approaching the station.
"He pushed him literally a second before the train approached," one eyewitness noted.
The man fell into a depression between the tracks, which saved him from being hit by the train. However, he suffered serious injuries: a fractured skull, four broken ribs, and a ruptured spleen.
Videos taken by eyewitnesses show firefighters pulling the man out from under the train. "He's alive!" — one of the people on the platform exclaims.
Hawkins, who was arrested shortly after the incident, was held without bail. His father said his son had been acting strange in recent weeks. They hadn't seen each other since Christmas.
According to police, Hawkins has at least three previous convictions, including an assault on a law enforcement officer in Queens in June 2019. His motives remain unclear at the time of the investigation.

"An innocent bystander was the victim of a horrific act of violence at the 18th Street subway station today. Thanks to the swift efforts of the NYPD, the suspect is now in custody. My heart goes out to the victim and her family, and I pray for their recovery," New York City Mayor Eric Adams wrote.
