At least 35 people have died and 43 have been injured when a car crashed into a crowd of people playing sports at a stadium in the Chinese city of Zhuhai, local authorities say. This happened on Monday evening, November 11.
According to preliminary information, the 62-year-old driver, surnamed Fan, drove a small SUV through the barrier and into the sports center, where he hit many people. He tried to flee the scene but was detained.
"When police found Fan, he was in the car, stabbing himself with a knife. Police immediately stopped him and sent him to the hospital. Fan is currently unconscious due to severe neck injuries. He is still receiving emergency treatment and cannot be questioned," CNN quotes the police statement as saying.
Police suspect that the incident may have been caused by Fan's dissatisfaction with how the property was divided as a result of his divorce.
