A hospital action movie: a medic with jiu-jitsu skills single-handedly apprehended an attacker.
CCTV cameras captured the moment Daniel Nelson tackled a man to the ground after the patient started lunging at him. The video was filmed early in the morning at the Royal Brisbane Hospital in Australia.
The video shows Nelson escorting an intoxicated man out of the emergency department before the patient appears to turn back toward him. The man throws an object at the healthcare worker, then lunges at him and throws several punches, but the medic managed to fight back.
Nelson quickly turns the tables, using his jiu-jitsu skills to overpower and restrain the attacker until security arrived to take over.
After posting the video online, the healthcare worker stated that he was able to defend himself, but emphasized that another medic might not have been able to.
"What if he had chosen a nurse half my size? A new graduate or a student. Someone who simply couldn't defend themselves," he asked.
Nelson said healthcare workers should not expect violence to be part of their job.
