Tourist breaks spine after falling off excursion boat
On the small island of Johnny Cay off the coast of Colombia, a woman fell from a tour boat into rough seas. Video shows the boat rocking, and the tourist suddenly being thrown off the bow, hitting her back on the sand and suffering a broken spine.
Onlookers and two tourist doctors rendered aid at the scene, but they were forced to improvise a cervical collar and a rigid stretcher due to a lack of equipment.
"We had to make our own cervical collar and secure her to the board because there were no medical instruments or emergency equipment nearby," witnesses said.
"The worst part is that the coast guard and other rescuers never arrived. We had to transfer her on the boat in the same clothes, praying she wouldn't move during the transfer. A real disgrace."
The incident has sparked criticism regarding the organization of tours in bad weather.
