The girl who sprayed pepper spray on an Uber driver in New York will not receive a prison sentence
During a ride in Manhattan last year, an incident occurred: passenger Jennifer Guilbeau sprayed pepper spray in the face of an Uber driver. According to police, the driver, Shohel Mahmood, stopped at a traffic light and began quietly praying in Arabic, after which the woman jumped out of the backseat, shouted insults, and sprayed pepper spray.
Video of the incident quickly spread around the world. Jennifer Guilbeau was charged with a hate crime for allegedly using racist remarks during the attack, but the charge was later dropped.
After months of litigation, Guilbeau reached a plea agreement with prosecutors: she pleaded guilty to felony harassment. As part of the plea agreement, she was ordered to perform 100 hours of community service, participate in an anti-racism program, and undergo therapy.
If all conditions are met, the charge could be reduced to a lesser offense. The driver said he forgave his attacker, though video of the incident remains a reminder that similar situations can happen even during a routine Uber ride in New York City.
