In the Portuguese village of Vale de Salgueiro, there is an unusual tradition associated with the celebration of Epiphany on January 6: children over the age of five are allowed to smoke.
The origins of the custom are unknown, but every year it causes public outrage. Despite criticism and inconsistency with the law on smoking, parents continue the tradition by buying cigarettes for their children. This is technically legal, as there is no law prohibiting parents from giving tobacco to their children, and the authorities do not interfere.
