A tram in Milan derailed and crashed into a store window
A serious accident involving public transportation occurred in central Milan. A tram derailed at high speed on Viale Vittorio Veneto and crashed into the wall of a residential building, striking a shop window.
According to the latest reports, the death toll has reached two. One of the fatalities was a 60-year-old man who was struck by the tram. The second victim died in the hospital after being taken in critical condition. More than 40 people sustained injuries of varying severity.
Before the collision, the tram struck several pedestrians and damaged a traffic light and the window of a nearby restaurant. Some people were trapped under the structure and were quickly rescued by rescuers. All injured were taken to nearby hospitals.
Investigators and Milan Prosecutor Marcello Viola are working at the scene. The cause of the tragedy is still being determined. Leading theories include a sudden deterioration in the driver's health or a faulty switch mechanism.
