In India, a worker fell into a vat of boiling sugar
His colleagues immediately rushed over at the young man's screams. They tried unsuccessfully to pull him out using large ladles and eventually rescued him with their bare hands. The worker spent almost a minute in the boiling jaggery.
The victim was laid on the ground, and they tried to help him while he screamed in pain. He was taken to the hospital with burns, but they were unable to save him.
Jaggery is a traditional unrefined sugar popular in India and other South Asian countries. It is made from boiled-down sugarcane or palm juice without separating the molasses, which is why it retains a dark brown color and a caramel flavor with a hint of bitterness. It is used in cooking and sweets, and is considered a healthier alternative to white sugar.
