The politician was walking alongside his supporters on the basketball court when an unknown assailant approached him from behind and fired at least 16 shots into the back of his head.

During the election campaign in the state of Guerrero, 5 candidates for the position of city mayors and one candidate for the deputy seat were killed.

Since last summer, 82 people have been killed in Mexico related to election processes, 34 of them candidates for local office.
